EXPLORING THE CYCLING EAR

Interactive Map ~ Sound Mixes

A map that show the three levels sound that I heard while cycling in Southwest Montreal.

This research-creation project delves into the concept of the “cycling ear”, which notes that bicycling produces specific listening patterns unique to the mode of transportation. By dividing sounds into three distinct levels - self-produced (Level 1), navigational (Level 2), and ambient (Level 3) - this project aims to understand how cyclists engage with their auditory environment.

Central to this project is the development of a comprehensive sound map that captures Southwest Montreal in the summer from the perspective of a cyclist. The recordings were taken on Tuesday, June 14, Wednesday, June 15, and Thursday, June 16, 2022, to capture what an “average” mid-week summer day might sound like. This map incorporates both illustrations and sound mixes, providing a multi-sensory experience for the audience.

By highlighting the nuances of listening while cycling, this research seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the interplay between sound, mobility, and urban environments. Ultimately, this map offers insights into how our auditory experiences are shaped by the modes of transportation we choose and invites folks to reconsider their relationship with sound in everyday life.
